Methimazole is an oral medication used to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). It works by preventing the thyroid gland from over-producing thyroid hormone. Methimazole is also used before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy. It belongs to the class of medications called antithyroid medications. This medicine may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
